Susan Cartmell is the pastor at Pilgrim Congregational Church in Harwich Port, MA since 2016. She previously comes from The Congregational Church of Needham where she served as Senior Minister for over 18 years in a suburban church of 600 active members. In Needham, she welcomed 300 new adults, confirmed 174 youth, increased stewardship, and started a teen drop in center.
Susan was a featured speaker at the Preaching Academy for the United Methodists Missouri Conference in September 2018 held in Kansas City. She has led several clergy workshops on “Preaching in Advent”, “Organizing Sermons Series”, and “Preaching Thematically” for pastors in Southern New England at joint meetings of the United Church of Christ conferences of Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut. Susan taught a course in Reading the Bible for Themes in the Special Studies Program at the Chautauqua Institution August 2018.
This year she will be teaching a class at Chautauqua entitled – “Bible Moments that Changed the World,” June 2019. In 2017 she hosted a New England Pastors Conference on Cape Cod entitled “Preaching: Why We Do It and How it Matters.” Susan has had a book table at the Festival of Homiletics for three years now and has enjoyed talking to hundreds of pastors from all parts of the nation, and around the world. Those conversations have convinced her that so many pastors are passionate about preaching and eager to find new ways to reach audiences today.
Susan resides in Harwich with her wife, Rev. Peggy O'Connor, who is Interim Senior Minister at Pilgrim Church in Duxbury, MA.
